You can begin with a busy mind

You sit down. Your phone is out of reach, but a conversation from an hour ago is still here. If meditation begins only after you stop thinking, it feels as though you have not arrived yet.
You can begin right there.
Choose something already present
Feel one hand resting against the other. The fabric beneath your fingers. A sound from outside. It need not be pleasant or strong, just something you can notice now.
Stay for a moment. When you realise you were thinking about something else, come back if you like. You have not lost the practice. You have found a moment to return.
Make it comfortable
You can open your eyes, move a foot or support your back. No posture proves that you are really meditating. If looking inward feels uncomfortable, try a sound or an object in the room. You can also finish.
Your breath is one option, not a requirement. If you choose it, let it keep its own rhythm. The NHS guide to comfortable breathing advises against forcing it.
A small ending counts
Before getting up, look around. Notice where you are and what you will do next. You do not need to assess whether you were calm enough. Take something more concrete with you: the feeling of your hands resting, ready to return to when the day gets busy.
There is a short guide in Meditate, with a voice or in silence. Choose one. You do not need to complete all three.
